Let’s talk lips!

Our latest news

Let’s talk lips!

Well hello March, it’s been a while since I put pen to paper so here I am! For this month I wanted to have a bit of a focus on lips and treatments I do in the clinic …  Lip treatments using dermal fillers are the third most popular treatment I provide after wrinkle relaxing injections and Profhilo.

Lip filler and contouring treatments allow you to create a look that’s subtle but different, by enhancing the natural look of your lips. Treatments are performed using dermal fillers to restore lip fullness and definition.

So first, the basics … How do Lip Fillers work? Lip fillers are made from synthetic hyaluronic acid (which exists naturally within the body) and they are efficient water-absorbers, which really help with lip hydration. It’s often a sign they are wearing off when you have to reach for the lip balm.

Everyone has different needs and requirements and this treatment doesn’t just appeal to the 20-somethings either. In fact, the majority of lip filler treatments I perform are on the over 35s. It’s very interesting though that there are many differences in their needs, approach, questions, expectations and concerns. Let me explain..

Younger Patients vs Older Patients

In my experience, the younger patients usually ask about price first. Having lip fillers has become as acceptable for females born in the 90s as having highlights or a manicure. The over 35’s are far more cautious. In fact, only recently I treated a lovely young lady who had not heard of Leslie Ash (I’m sure many of you will remember her unfortunately super public experience with lip filler). I must stress the filler used  for Leslie Ash is no longer on the market and the safety profile of fillers used in lips has improved beyond recognition since those days.

As more and more lip filler procedures have are performed worldwide each year, more evidence is continually gathered  which enables manufacturers to generate a much safer product and reduce unwanted side effects.

Lip Treatment Before and After

The Trout Pout

Another key difference is that more mature ladies are concerned they will look like they have a “trout pout”. Often, the younger patients want the effect to be obvious. Depending on the volume of your lip pre-treatment and dental support that the lips have, an obvious effect is unlikely with a single syringe. Some patients are advised that having cosmetic dentistry to support the lips may be a worthwhile investment as without good support from the teeth no amount of lip filler will give the desired effect.

Vertical Lip Lines

I frequently recommend the use of lip filler to treat vertical lip lines. We call these ‘Bar Code’ lips – the lines you get running up from the lips as you get older. Very few people don’t suffer with lip lines, whether they have smoked during their lives or not. Bone and tissue changes in the aging face contribute to their appearance. When I first suggest the use of fillers here many clients look horrified until I explain! By injecting filler into the lip border, creating improved definition and subtle stretch of the border, the appearance of the vertical lip lines improve. A very popular treatment for these lines is Viscoderm, a skin booster which softens the lines around the contour area.. you can read a bit more about this here on an earlier blog I wrote

Taking Lips Seriously

Horrific side effects from lip fillers are newsworthy. I welcome this. Lip fillers should not be undertaken lightly. The risks are real. Hence the in-depth medical history, the exceedingly detailed consent form and printed list of potential side effects I give you before the treatment.

I’m not trying to put you off (although it may feel that way)! I just don’t want you to choose to have lip fillers without being aware of the risks.

The good news is that these risks are vastly reduced by the technique I favour for lip fillers (the micro cannula rather than the needle). My level of understanding of clinical anatomy will also help to prevent side effects and their management in the unlikely event they do occur.

Lip Treatment Before and After

Getting the Best Results

One last point… clients have said that using a needle gives better results. I promise you the result is not down to the technique used to inject the filler. It’s down the size of the lip pre-treatment and product choice, which safety dictates. My favourites are Aliaxin FL (for a softer lift) & Aliaxin LV (for luxury volume). Read more about Aliaxin here.

Of course, patient expectation is also critical. A 1ml syringe is the equivalent of 1/5th of a teaspoon… that will not create a huge lip unless your lips are fairly voluminous in the first place! It’s like spreading butter on toast – it will only spread so far before you lose the effect completely!

I will always favour the micro-cannula after the needle as bruising afterwards is rare, risks of vascular complications are hugely reduced and the immediate effect is far more pleasant than after a needle (only 2 visible entry points) and far more indicative of the final effect.

Your Requirements….

Whether you are looking to emulate your favourite celebrity, rebalance the lip as you believe the perspective is wrong (the perfect lip, by the way, should have 60% volume in the bottom and 40% in the top), improve the appearance of vertical lip lines, improve the lip condition or turn back the clock just a few years, lip fillers are more popular then ever and I’d be delighted to talk through your specific needs and find the right solution for you in clinic.

The M Word: Your Skin & The Menopause

Our latest news

The M Word: Your Skin & The Menopause

October is Menopause Awareness Month and sometimes I think there are awareness days and months for just about everything these days, but I’m really pleased to see the Menopause getting more coverage and awareness on a daily basis. I’ve watched the Menopause Mandate with interest on social media this month and it’s great to see so many people actually talking about a subject that really was taboo until even a few years ago. I love to see women helping women and getting involved and supporting each other. So, here goes….

I’m Wendy and I’m Menopausal (yikes – did I say that out loud?!)! My journey on the Meno Motorway has probably been different from yours and yours different from mine, as it is a very personal experience, but I write this from the heart as I know what a roller coaster ride it is for every woman. And regardless of the differences there are some physical symptoms that most of us will go through and those regarding your skin are ones that I hope I can even help with a little…

Menopause

Why does Skin Change during Menopause?

Way more than just hot flushes and mood swings Menopause really changes your skin…. our body stops making as much collagen and we lose some fat under the skin, and this means the skin’s elasticity drops.  Oestrogen helps skin produce oil and hold onto water, so extremely dry skin during menopause is common thanks to a drop in this hormone.

All this can cause sagging — especially around the neck, jawline, and cheeks — and fine lines and wrinkles.

Some people will also notice acne as oestrogen levels fall and androgen levels remain stable (androgens are male sex hormones, like testosterone), increasing sebum production and causing pores to become blocked.

Can you Prevent Skin Changes During Menopause?

You may not be able to prevent menopause from taking a toll on your skin, but you can certainly take steps to make your skin look its best.

Because one of the main factors in skin aging is sun exposure, it’s essential to wear SPF daily — even when it’s cloudy. To help keep hormonal acne at bay, use a cleanser with salicylic acid. This can penetrate pores and dissolve oil.

Hydration is also important for menopausal skin. It’s likely that your face and body will feel drier than usual and using a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid may help draw moisture into the skin It’s best to use moisturizers with hyaluronic acid on damp skin so the ingredient can bond with water.

A moisturizer with ceramides can help moisture from escaping and topping a moisturizer with a facial oil adds even more hydration.

In addition to skin care products, it’s always helpful to eat hydrating foods, drink plenty of water, and try to get quality sleep.

How Can I Help?

Not surprisingly all the menopause changes can make our confidence plummet, just when we need it the most.

There are aesthetic treatments that can also help – including skin boosters and Profhilo (this has honestly been my absolute ‘meno-hero’) as well as anti-wrinkle treatments.  If you’re worried about an over puffed face or a trout pout, then please rest assured that my primary aim at Skin Deep Clinic is to help with little tweaks to give you back any of the lost confidence and ease you through.

I’ve also recently starting using the Zo Skin Health products and I can attest personally to their efficacy in giving me a bit of my glow back as well as treating my drier skin. Skin Deep Clinic are an accredited provider of ZO Skin Health and me or one of my trained colleagues can spend some time on a short consultation to get the right products for you.

If you’d like to discuss any treatments or skin care further, please do get in touch or let’s have a chat next time you are in the clinic and together we can work out the best way to get you back you!

Meantime as always, my very best wishes

Hello Autumn & Hello ZO!

I hope this finds everyone well? What a strange September we’ve had, not least with passing of Queen Elizabeth II. I don’t know about you, but I found the news quite shocking. And wow – I felt amazingly proud of Britain as a nation on the day of her state funeral and even before. I still love reading little snippets of news and stories about her as people continue to celebrate her amazing life. She will be sadly missed by us all.

As we move into autumn (seriously where did summer go?), I’d just like to update you on the news and newest addition to Skin Deep Clinic. I am delighted to have now introduced the ZO Skin Health products, available for all patients to buy.

As you know, I am very fussy about any treatments I add to the Skin-Deep Clinic portfolio, it is of utmost most importance to me that any treatment I suggest to you is of the highest quality and ZO is just this. Most of the team here at Skin Deep Clinic have road tested it over several weeks and I even got the younger Hartwig’s involved in trialing it for teenage skin – you will be pleased to know it met their highest of standards!

The products can correct the skin with high concentrations of active ingredients such as pure Retinol, advanced peptides and powerful antioxidants. The formulas promote cellular function whilst restoring and maintaining a more youthful healthy-looking skin.

Is ZO Skin Health Safe?

The ZO range are medical-grade, strong therapeutic and prescription-strength products with extensive scientific research behind them. They are allergy-free and cruelty-free. With the professional advice from your aesthetician, they are very safe and offer outstanding results.

These products should only be bought through approved skin clinics with ZO trained staff. Do not be tempted to buy products over the internet as their authenticity cannot be guaranteed. A thorough consultation will determine what is and isn`t suitable for you to use to get the best results.

The Benefits of ZO Skin Health Products

  • ZO Skin Health helps address hydration, skin barrier restoration, DNA repair, inflammation and can control pigment.
  • For patients with anti-ageing needs, ZO has added potent ingredients with higher concentrations than those found in over-the-counter skincare creams to deliver impressive results.
  • ZO contains some of the most effective anti-ageing ingredient today – is available in a variety of their creams. Retinoids regulate cell metabolism and stimulate the skin cell turn-over with collagen production. This leads to smoother, healthier skin with improved texture and elasticity.
  • ZO’s advanced formulas can help smooth wrinkles and improve the firmness of the skin.

ZO Skin Health products can be purchased at the Clinic (after a short consultation with one of our ZO trained team). Please do ask when you come in next or contact us. Read more about it here.

If you have any questions about ZO, just give us a shout and we’ll be happy to help. With all best wishes for a happy October and look forward to seeing you soon!

Happy Birthday to Us!

August is a really special month for me as we’re celebrating one whole year in our new, larger premises at Archers Way!  I simply can’t believe how quickly the last 12 months have gone. This week we’ve been celebrating with a slice (or two) of cake, but if I’m honest that’s what we do every week! When I moved in last year it was with some natural trepidation at making such a big move, especially as Covid was still hanging around, but I can honestly say it could not have gone better, and so much of that is down to your support and loyalty… so a huge, massive thank you to all my patients, colleagues and friends!

We’ve seen so much change in the last year and it has all been so positive. Here are the last 12 months of Skin Deep Clinic in a nutshell….

NEW TEAM MEMBERS

We are now a team of five ladies, and it is an absolute joy for me to come into work every day with my Archers Way colleagues – we all share a similar sense of humour, a great work ethic and a mutual love of sweet treats. It’s a great combination! So, just to recap for anyone who hasn’t visited for a while this is the Skin Deep Team:

Wendy owner of Skin Deep Clinic. I am a fully qualified nurse prescriber and offer a range of treatments

Mitch is a trained professional counsellor who can help with a variety of emotional issues and runs the Counselling Service at the clinic, she is also our clinic administrator and is usually in reception to meet patients when they arrive

Sally is an excellent and highly qualified physiotherapist. Take a look at her services here

Sophie is our new nurse who has almost completed her training and will be available for appointment from 19 August 2022. Read more about Sophie here.

Lauren is a very talented semi-permanent makeup, brow and lash artist, she is also trained to carry out our HydraFacial treatments. You can book her services here

NEW TREATMENTS AND SERVICES

HydraFacial

In March we introduced HydraFacial to the clinic, and it’s been a massive success.  HydraFacial gives you instant and visible results after each treatment. This patented technology follows a six-step treatment process – Detox, Cleanse and Exfoliation, Brightening, Extraction, Hydration and finally Rejuvenation. Dead skin cells and impurities are removed, and the skin is hydrated with antioxidants and peptides.

Counselling

We introduced our Counselling Service to the clinic in September last year. This person-centred counselling is a talking-based form of therapy. At your appointment, you will talk to our trained professional, Mitch Wappner. She will encourage you to share how you feel and the issue/s you wish to overcome.

NEW PRODUCTS

I am delighted to have introduced the ZO Skin Health range of products to the clinic. This really is a game changer for your skin. We are now fully trained in how to advise the best options and I have been using them for over a month to road test and quality check. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Zo Skin Health Products

ZO Skin Health offers cutting-edge products and therapeutic treatments. They also compliment the HydraFacial treatment system too. I’m sure you will love it as much as I do. I have plenty of stock in the clinic so please do take a look when you’re next in.

CLINIC EXPANSION

With the arrival of Sophie, our new nurse we are now able to offer you a lot more appointments, including Fridays and weekends. Sophie’s diary is now available to book.

As part of this expansion, we are still in the throes of building Sophie her new treatment room, so as I type there is a still little building work and disruption in the clinic. But this will be ready by mid-August when Sophie starts running her clinic.

Sophie completed her Profhilo Training in July!

So, what a year it’s been and I can’t wait to see what the next 12 months bring. It has been and continues to be an amazing journey and most of all I couldn’t do it without you, all my patients new and longstanding. I truly value your custom and friendship.

As usual there are plenty of things going on at Skin Deep Clinic, we are as busy as ever and it is so lovely to see patients and catch up. If I could, I would make the appointments longer just for some extra chat! See you soon but in the meantime  I hope that you are all enjoying a relaxing summer and taking the opportunity for some holiday time, here or abroad.

With much love and best wishes as always

Wendy x
