Debunking the Botox Myths

Those of you who know me, know that I am always very keen for my patients and prospective patients to understand as much as possible about the treatments I administer at Skin Deep Clinic, doing this gives us a mutual understanding of how they work and what to expect. Botox is the most popular treatment at Skin Deep Clinic, so I thought I’d use the first blog of 2022 to dispel some myths and confirm some realities about this much discussed drug.

But first … a little bit of history; Botox was first used in the early 80’s to treat people suffering from cross eyes or flickering eye lids (strabismus and blepharospasm). Through the use of Botox, people noticed the appearance of lines and wrinkles was improving. The use of Botox in aesthetic medicine was born.

We are born making facial expressions. We can get away with pulling faces such as frowning and raising our brows for years before overuse leaves us with lines that are visible even when we are not making any expression. The lines have gone from being DYNAMIC – visible on expression only – to STATIC – visible all the time! This is when Botox comes into its element

Myth 1: Anyone can Buy Botox

Botox is a brand name for Botlinum Toxin. It is available only on prescription following a face to face consultation with a prescriber. The genuine product can not be bought off Instagram or the internet or over the counter so I’ll start with a warning – if you haven’t seen a prescriber face to face then its pot luck what you are having injected. The pharmacies who manufacture the genuine products are fiercely strict about who they will dispense to.

Myth 2: Botox Freezes Muscles

Botox is a purified protein and when injected into the muscles whose overuse causes lines and wrinkles, causes the muscles to RELAX so they can’t contract. The side effect of this is smoother skin. It is therefore a myth that Botox freezes muscles as it actually relaxes them!

Myth 3: Botox Lasts 6 Months

There is no magic brand of Botulinum toxin that will last 6 months. Botox will actually virtually be untraceable after 3 months however the effects CAN last longer. When muscles are put in to a state of relaxation for brief and repeated periods, we will start to establish muscle memory whereby we do not use the same facial expressions as frequently. Therefore, even when the drug has completely worn off we can still look smooth although the muscles can be fully contracted.

Myth 4: Using more Botox Will Make the Effects Last Longer

Using the correct dose will give optimum longevity. Depending on your facial anatomy, using more can have unwanted side effects such as a very heavy brow.

Myth 5: If I Stop Treatment I Will Suddenly Look Older

If you stop having treatment you will start using the facial expressions more regularly whose activity contributes to the appearance of static lines. These will not suddenly re-appear though so you won’t age overnight.

Myth 6: Using Botox in the Forehead Will Lift the Brows

Botox is a muscle relaxant so is not an effective way of treating heavy brows. In fact, many people who have heavy brows, which presents as eyelid laxity, are unsuitable for treatment. Horizontal forehead lines are caused by regularly raising our brows. Relaxing the muscle we use to raise the brows will slightly lower the brow position. This is unnoticeable in many patients but intolerable for those who already have a heavy brow.

2021 Review …What a Year it’s Been!

Coronavirus had other ideas about returning to work in January 2021 and Skin Deep Clinic closed until April 12th. I returned to work for the NHS on their vaccine rollout program. I started my career as a staff nurse working at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in 1993 and ironically started working via the same NHS trust some 28 years later!

Skin Deep Clinic re-opened in April and I soon realised that my one-woman band was not sustainable if I wanted to take any time off at the weekends. Mitch joined me in May to sort out all the admin. She took a huge pressure off my workload and left me to focus on treatments, my favourite part of work.

The neighbouring premises was available for rent so I took the plunge and applied for planning permission to change its use from an office. 6 weeks later, I was signing a lease on the premises and on August 2nd Skin Deep Clinic opened its doors at number 2 Knights Court. It seemed very different from the launch of Skin Deep Clinic in 2013 in my dining room masquerading as a clinic. I certainly had not ever planned to open my own clinic but as the clinic and workload grew I jumped at the opportunity. Well, I tentatively poked my head above the parapet in all honesty but I took the leap of faith nevertheless.

Reception at the new clinic

For the first few weeks, the premises felt vast. We were soon joined by Lauren AKA Chilli Chapel offering semi-permanent make-up and lashes. Closely followed by Sally from Salop Physiotherapy. Mitch is a qualified counsellor. She joined me on a full time basis. We set up one of the rooms as a counselling room and in-between appointments she covers reception. It is lovely to see the waiting room chairs (whose colour I pondered over for far too long) all being used.

Clinic is now busier than ever and the seasonal ebbs and flows experienced prior to Covid, have disappeared. Chemical Peels are now back on the menu. Only last week IBSA (who make Profhilo) launched two new products. One is a cleanser and the other is Profhilo body specifically intended for the abdomen and upper arms.

The new Profhilo Body range (I love it!)

I am forever humbled by every single patient who come to Skin Deep Clinic and allow me to do their treatment. There is more choice than ever now as the popularity of treatment and demand has risen over the years. So I extend a huge thank you to all the loyal patients who return and new patients booking for the first time. Don’t forget to pop in before we close on 22nd December if you’d like to buy a raffle ticket in support of Target Ovarian Cancer. I hope you and your families and friends truly enjoy the festivities and we look forward to welcoming you to Skin Deep Clinic in 2022.

A Full House, Half a Century and Aesthetic Nursing…

Great news – I am delighted to announce that Skin Deep Clinic now has 4 full rooms! Sally Jones moved into Clinic 2 last weekend. Sally is a local physiotherapist who has been qualified for 11 years and launched Salop Physiotherapy 3 years ago. She has a thriving business and I am delighted she has chosen Skin Deep Clinic as a base to work from. Sally says she is looking forward to welcoming patients to her new base and working from premises with like-minded people. If you’d like to know more take a look at Sally’s website Salop Physiotherapy

Fifty (… and fabulous)

I had the privilege of turning 50 last weekend. My children have always said I am pre-historic and now feel it is official! I was incredibly  touched by the number of messages, calls, cards and gifts and extend heartfelt thanks for making my day even more special. It really is possible to eat cake every day for 7 days (and some…) As one beautiful patient wrote in a card “The ultimate F word”….never a truer word spoken.  Thank you all for your good wishes and I am so looking forward to what the next decade brings for me and Skin Deep Clinic ….

Aesthetic Nursing

I wrote about becoming an aesthetic nurse in a previous blog a while ago. You can read more here . I am frequently contacted by people asking for advice how to get into aesthetic nursing and wrote this blog to help give direction. I would like to re-iterate that I will not support the provision of aesthetic medicine by none health care professionals. Even if you have completed a course and have insurance, I have very firm beliefs that aesthetic medicine should be provided by registered health care professionals only. Therefore, I will not respond to any request to prescribe, support or mentor none registered healthcare professionals who have chosen to work in aesthetics. I have been a qualified nurse for 30 years and despite being a nurse independent prescriber and completing post graduate level clinical facial anatomy and undertaking over 10,000 procedures, I still frequently refer patients to more qualified and experienced colleagues. I believe these qualifications are an absolute minimum before moving into a career in aesthetic medicine.

I am aware that there are nurses and doctors bending the prescribing rules as exposed by Save Face and reported in last weekend’s Sunday Times. This saddens yet does not totally surprise me. In life there will always be rule makers (abiders) and rule breakers. I am firmly planted in the rule abider camp.

Skin Deep Clinic has Moved …. but only Next Door, so Easy to Find

Returning from lockdown #3 in April 2021, it soon became apparent that in order to maintain the same level of customer service to meet the consistently high demand I would need help. Fast forward nearly 6 months from the last blog, I am now housed in a purpose designed premises right next door to my old clinic and I am now a team of two. We have dedicated labelled parking bays. No need to wait in your car if you arrive early though as the waiting room is open and spacious.

I am hugely proud of the new clinic and re-assured by every patients positive reaction as they walk through the front door into reception.

Mitch now covers reception during opening hours, and we have a landline too. This enables smooth and more prompt communication. Mitch has taken on all the admin that leaves me to do what I most enjoy – one to one time with patients in clinic, carrying out treatments that I am passionate about.

Mitch is also a degree level qualified counsellor and has recently welcomed her first few clients into the counselling room – one of Skin Deep Clinics 4 rooms. Mitch sees individuals over the age of 18 for a variety of issues including grief, depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Counselling is an excellent opportunity for you to talk in confidence about anything you might be struggling with either currently or in the past.  Whatever the issues, Counselling offers you the space and time to focus on the things bothering you.

Mitch in the New Counselling Room at Skin Deep Clinic

Mitch says – “My clients have described me as a warm, caring, welcoming person, who understands first hand that it can be difficult to talk about sensitive issues and the effect these can have on you and others. Whether you are struggling with stress or worry, feelings of shame or guilt or one of the many other issues commonly felt throughout our lives, you do not need to face them alone. I am here to listen without judgment, to respect you as an individual and to provide you with a safe, accepting and supportive place to explore and process your own thoughts and feelings in your own time. You will then be better able to make the changes needed to understand yourself better, identify your needs and be able to communicate these better, so you become more confident, kinder to yourself, calmer and therefore be able to lead a more fulfilling life.”

A new service from a talented local practitioner will also be available next month…more to follow.

Skin Deep Clinic is Back!

Skin Deep Clinic is Back!

It’s great to be back!

I am so excited to reopen Skin Deep Clinic once more. I hope all my Shropshire patients have managed to find an appointment. (Well, I say “Shropshire” but patients are travelling from far and wide at the mo!)

I am conscious that many have had to wait longer than they would have liked. I do have a waiting list in the event of cancellations, so feel free to drop me a text on 07801 644888 to check you are on it or to be added. If you can only make certain days or certain times of day, please add this detail to the text.

Covid-19 Vaccine

I have had a few enquiries regarding treatments and the Covid-19 vaccine. The guidance for dermal fillers hasn’t changed – you must not book in a dermal filler treatment two weeks prior to your vaccine and wait for at least three weeks after.

This rule applies whether it’s your first jab or second jab. Which also means it is feasible to have a treatment between the vaccine doses if spaced at a 12-week interval.

This guidance is due to a small number of patients with dermal fillers, who have experienced an immune response following the vaccine. Immune responses are a known side effect of dermal fillers and can be unpleasant and tricky to treat.

B*tox and Profhilo

As for B*tox and Profhilo, Skin Deep Clinic hasn’t received any advice against treatment. The key point here is that the virus and vaccine are new, so there is little evidence to refer to.

Most people who experience any ill effects after the vaccine only suffer for a couple of days. But, if you are feeling well, I will be happy to treat you with B*tox or Profhilo. I would never want to treat someone who’s feeling unwell for whatever reason.

If you are in any doubt and would rather move a treatment that’s already booked in, this can be done via the online booking link on your confirmation email.

Or simply book in another treatment at http://skindeepclinic.co.uk/prices-and-booking/ then message 07801 644888, so I can offer your existing appointment to another patient on the waiting list.

The future

Exciting plans for Skin Deep Clinic are afoot… although I have to wait to share the finer details with you. What I can say is that I will be looking for another medical aesthetics practitioner to work with me in the near future. I’m aware that even before the pandemic, there was sometimes a month-long wait for an appointment. By expanding, I will be able to offer more flexible appointment times every day and introduce a wider range of treatments.

I look forward to welcoming you to Skin Deep Clinic.

Best Wishes,

Retail of Recommended Skincare Products

Retail of Recommended Skincare Products

Hello and welcome to February’s update from Skin Deep Clinic.

As a trained nurse, I have been able to join the NHS vaccinating programme, which has been rewarding. It’s amazing to see the scale of what has been accomplished in such a short space of time. I hope the benefits of lockdown and vaccination continue to be measurable in the statistics.

Speaking of lockdown, how has your skin been looking and feeling? If you’re missing the effects of regular medical aesthetic treatments, not all is lost, I assure you! If you follow me on Facebook and Instagram, you’ll have seen the products that I recommend to brighten up a lockdown skincare routine.

Below are three products that I LOVE. I’m selling both and deliver across the UK.

Retinol serum

Retinol is a key ingredient that I have re-introduced to my skincare routine temporarily. It is a fast-acting form of Vitamin A, which speeds up skin cell turnover – revealing fresher, healthier-looking skin. It helps the tired outer skin cells to shed, those cells that make our skin look dull and wrinkles look deeper.

There are a couple of options I suggest: all-over Retinol Face Cream at £63 or the Retinol Eye Cream at £49.

The retinol eye cream is proving the most popular, probably because the eye area is the most visible part of our face when wearing masks. Although, with the current reliance video calling through Zoom and Teams, the full-face option does have advantages.

Vitamin C

If you’re considering the all-over Retinol Face Cream, I recommend you use a Vitamin C Serum too, as the effects of these vitamins complement each other. Again, the use of Retinol will grant other products better absorption by removing the outer dead skin cells.

Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant, helping improve fine lines and brighten dull, uneven skin tone. My preferred Vitamin C skincare brand costs £80.

Profhilo Haenkenium®

Profhilo Haenkenium® is my year-round go-to product and bestseller. I often call it my “miracle cream”!

You’d enjoy quality grade Hyaluronic Acid (HA) in a light, non-greasy, easily absorbed formula. One function of HA is to hold water, which improves hydration whilst stimulating collagen and elastin production for tighter and brighter skin.

ToneSmart Cream Foundation

This is brand new to Skin Deep Clinic! Advanced mineral protection from the industry-leading SkinBetter range, which adapts to the colour of your skin tone.

ToneSmart is skin-smoothing, goes on light and SPF50, to put your mind at ease in the sun.

Ordering skincare products

Postage is free by my pedal power during lockdown if you live in the vicinity of Shrewsbury town centre. Outside of Shrewsbury, I recommend Royal Mail First Class (£4.85) as it is prompt plus your cream(s) would be insured.

To order, or if you have any questions, please call or text 07801 644888 or email [email protected]

If I do not reply straight away, I am likely to be in clinic or helping with the vaccination programme, so bear with me!

Like you, I’m looking forward to “freedom” once more J Stay safe, stay healthy.

Best Wishes,

Wendy xx
